The Almanor  RC Flyers club was formed in
October 2004 as an
AMA chartered club
#4579.  Prior to this, a group of 6-8
persons gathered informally at makeshift
flying sites in the Lake Almanor basin.  A
few were experienced pilots and taught the
others how to build, fly, and yes, repair
model aircraft.
From the start, the group lacked an adequate flying site.  Fields used were
characterized by uneven, rock-strewn surfaces, various man-made obstacles,
flying space confined by tall trees, and forced downwind landings. The physical
toll on airplanes and pilot confidence has been substantial.  Nevertheless, the
group persevered and flying skills steadily improved.  Some of the group's early
experiences are documented in
Bad Day at Goose Bay and Mayhem at
Mountain Meadows.

In mid 2004,  a site owned by Plumas County which would solve all these
problems became a real possibility.  The group decided to apply for a club
charter with the AMA thereby enhancing our status in the eyes of the property
owner.  That charter was granted and the club formulated a proposal for
presentation to Plumas County representatives.  With the strong support of
County Supervisor Bill Dennison, the proposal was accepted and, as of October
2005, we are  flying at this new site.  We continue to seek new members who will
hopefully share the enjoyment of this multi-faceted hobby.         .
